The iconic Hollywood sign may be making a move out of California. Super-star movie news, is up next!
Hey guys! Welcome to GettheDaily.com. I’m Dana Ward with all of the latest in Hollywood.
Can the movie and celebrity mecca survive without the ever-famous Hollywood sign? It seems the land that has hosted the larger-than-life sign since 1923 is up for grabs. While the letters were initially put-up to promote real estate in the area, those big white letters spelling out Hollywood have inarguably become a SoCal icon. An investment group purchased 138 untouched acres of land from the estate of billionaire Howard Hughes just about 5-years ago for 1-point-5-million-dollars. And now the group is offering the land for 22-million-bucks. Even with the public standing behind the Hollywood sign preservation, it may take some serious starpower to keep these 45-foot letters from being torn down.
And another symbolic icon exists no longer. It’s James Bond’s famous Aston Martin that a driver accidentally plunged into a lake while on-set in northern Italy. The driver wasn’t even racing in a scene for the newest Quantum of Solace 007 film, but he was simply delivering the stud vehicle to the set during heavy rain over the weekend. The driver had minor injuries from the fall into Lake Gardam, and Bond’s car was smashed and totaled.
Harry Potter founder - J-K Rowling - sues her story’s biggest superfan for getting too wizardly. Apparently, Steven Vander-Ark began working with a boutique publisher to get his online encyclopedia of Potter knowledge transferred to hardcover, and according to Rowling, it interferes directly with a project of her own already in the works. Vander-Ark’s internet catalog of spells, personalities and make-believe is SO intense and thorough that in the past, Rowling gave an award to ‘The Harry Potter Lexicon’ and admitted to checking the site for references. Vander-Ark became known as an H-P expert, being interviewed for articles, speaking at conventions as well as being a guest on NBC’s Today show and even appearing in a special feature documentary for one of the films in the series. The trial - questioning if the internet site violates copyright law - started this week and the Harry Potter side is not letting down. The judge said he could go either side for the ruling, but he actually suggested not only a quick settlement between the two parties, but a possible collaboration.

The World’s Biggest Airline is created and the Pope visits America but received a less than cordial, find out why coming up right now on Get the Daily.com
Hi, I’m Dana Ward here with your world news roundup.
Delta Airlines and Northwest Airlines merged this week to effectively create the world’s largest airline. Delta announced that it has bought the Minnesota-based carrier for $3-billion. The move comes amidst high gas prices, consumer discontent and union disputes that have plagued the industry. These factors led to hug loses by airlines totaling up to $35-billion from 2001-2006. Because of these economic woes, and increased competition from European and Asian carriers, airlines have faced pressure to consolidate in hopes of gaining market share and reducing competition. With news of this merger and the recent closure of 3 US carriers, some expert say that airfares will likely increase as gas prices go up and competition dwindles.
The Pope visits America this week, but questions surrounding his protection of pedophiles have been rehashed. Pope Benedict was accused of protecting some 19 bishops who have been accused of child abuse by the director of ‘bishop accountability.org’, a group that follows child abuse cases in the church. The 19 bishops that the group was referring to were in their words “credibly accused” of child abuse but have not been charged with any crime, stripped of their titles, or even censured by the church. The Pope did not deny these charges during his flight to America, but did say that he was “deeply ashamed” over the scandal and that pedophiles would “absolutely be excluded from the ministry”.
And another twist in the Detroit mayor fiasco. The Detroit city council refused to allow Mayor Kilpatrick to present his annual budget to them on Monday. The move follows 3 days of hearings in which the mayor’s lawyers were questioned by the lawmakers. The council, which had voted 7-1 in favor of the mayor resigning, was criticized by the mayor for “playing judge and jury in the court of public opinion”. Kilpatrick has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in lying about an affair he had with a staffer. He has also been accused of using $8-million to cover-up his actions. Kilpatrick presented his budget to reporters and 3 council members later in the day.

Female mud wrestling has moved beyond being just a spectator sport for fun, and in Siberia, it’s now an actual competition. Russia is holding its first ever regional event. The technical rules are hard to forget: No biting, no scratching and no hair-pulling. Event organizers claim that it’s not actually mud in the wrestling area, but the women are rolling around in special therapeutic clay from a local spa.
And it seems a Pennsylvania town has asked paranormal investigators to check-out its police station. According to some station employees, creepy things have been occurring there for years, and only the fact that the place is haunted can explain it. Some say the typewriter types without anyone pressing the buttons, the attic door springs open when bolted shut and the sidewalk-sweeper starts-up without a battery or key. Everyone at the police station is awaiting the paranormal report results.
Over the weekend, a Michigan woman at a bank left her photo i-d and correct address on an account application just before pulling-out a handgun and demanding cash from the banker. Within 1-hour, police had arrested the woman.
Postal workers in Wisconsin making the rounds are now armed… with water pistols. It has become customary during this time of the year for workers on a specific route to get attacked by wild turkeys. A regional wildlife supervisor for the State Department warns locals to stop feeding the turkeys as the wild animals seem to be less afraid, and more likely to attack humans. The supervisor also says postal workers are likely attached most because the colors –red-white-and-blue attract the wild animal as it’s customary for the male turkey’s head to change to all of those colors during mating season.

The NBA Most Valuable Player race heats up and Kansas takes care of business in the NCAA basketball championship on this edition of getthedaily.com
Welcome to Get-the-Daily-dot-com. I’m Dana Ward here with your sports news update.
The Kansas Jayhawks won their third NCAA Basketball Championship after defeating the Memphis Tigers 75-68 on Monday. The game was close from the start but with just under two minutes Memphis began to pull away. Kansas battled back and relied on a strategy of fouling as Memphis struggled with free throws throughout the season, making just over half of them. The strategy paid off and with a few seconds left in the game, Kansas was only down by 3. Kansas star Mario Chalmers shot a heavily contested three pointer with 2 seconds left. It somehow went in to and tied the game. Kansas used their momentum to take over the extra period and secure the win. The loss was only the second one this season for Memphis, which won an NCAA-record 38 games this season.
The NBA season is drawing to a close which means the MVP race is heating up. This year’s top 5 candidate list includes Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, Tim Duncan and Chris Paul. Paul and Bryant are widely seen to be the two front runners, though James, Duncan and Garnett are not out of the race. An LA Times- led national poll of sports reporters confirms this sentiment as Bryant and Paul appeared as the winner in all but 3 ballots. Garnett would be in the top two, but has fought injuries and lack of playing time since his Celtics generally have the game in hand by the start of the fourth quarter. Bryant is considered a strong candidate because of his performance this year and in years past. For all of his accolades, championships, and fame Bryant has never won a league MVP award.
